Ankara is the capital city of Turkey, located in the central part of the country. As of my last update in September 2021, Ankara had a population of around 5.5 million people, making it the second-largest city in Turkey after Istanbul. The city’s history dates back thousands of years, and it has served as a significant center for various civilizations throughout its past.
Ankara’s status as the capital of Turkey was established in 1923 after the Turkish War of Independence, when the country underwent a significant transformation under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. He sought to modernize and westernize Turkey and chose Ankara as the new capital due to its central location and its symbolic significance as a symbol of Turkish unity.
The city is known for its diverse cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and government institutions. Notable landmarks in Ankara include Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; Kocatepe Mosque, one of the largest mosques in Turkey; and the ancient Roman Temple of Augustus, among others.
Ankara has a vibrant cultural scene, with numerous museums, theaters, and art galleries, as well as a lively university community. The city’s climate is characterized by hot and dry summers, and cold winters with occasional snowfall.
Please note that since my information is current as of July 2023, there may have been developments or changes in Ankara after that date.
